ENGINE DRIVEN CENTRIFUGAL PUMPS

To ensure normal operation of the fuel system of an aircraft or helicopter during different flight modes under conditions of high altitude and to reduce its weight and increase the reliability, the fuel is generally supplied from the feeder tank into the engine by two pumping stages.

The first pumping stage, as have been mentioned previously, is carried out with electric motor driven centrifugal pumps or hydraulic turbine driven pumps mounted in feeder tanks, and the second one – with centrifugal pumps mounted on the aircraft engine, which are driven by the engine shaft through a reducer located in the gearbox. The two-stage pumping system implementing centrifugal engine-driven pump (CEDP) enables to reduce the fuel system weight due to the reduction of power capacity, and accordingly the unit weight, of the first pumping stage, to increase its reliability in case of failure of the first pumping stage, as well as enables to support low pressure along the path from the feeder tank to CEDP, which simplifies sealing of joints in fuel lines and reduces pipeline weight. The CEDP operation modes are directly related to operation modes of an aircraft engine during different flight conditions through the speed of rotation, fuel delivery rate and other parameters. Hence, CEDP is a multimode pump, as it should provide optimal parameters in wide range of changing operation modes through speed of rotation and fuel delivery rate.

In aircraft powerplant fuel supply systems utilizing booster hydraulic turbine driven pumps, the fuel that drives the turbine is also supplied, in most cases, by special CEDPs mounted on the aircraft accessory gearbox, which is also driven by the aircraft engine.

A broad range of CEDPs were developed in Kristall Design Bureau, in stand-alone and integral embodiment, which provide the whole range of required parameters and are successfully used in a majority of Russian aircraft engines, airplanes and helicopters. These include DTsN-58, DTsN-64, DTsN-68, DTsN-70, DTsN-72, DTsN-78, DTsN-80, DTsN-82, DTsN-94, DTsN-96, DTsN-100, DTsN-102, DTsN-104, etc.
